stART~Martin Luther King

The kids were so excited when we read about Martin Luther King, Jr. Once KJ realized that his actual birthday was January 15th (the day after we started reading about him) the kids have been “celebrating” ever since! Here is one of our creations. Be sure to check out our super cute MLK cookies too!

We mixed brown and white paint to make three different shades. The kids made their handprints using each of the three different shades.

Here are two of the books that we read.
by Jean Marzollo
Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
by Doreen Rappaport

I was VERY careful in choosing MLK books that were age appropriate for my kids. You can read my reviews about these two books here and here.

It is difficult to find books on him that are age appropriate. I admit I wussed out this year and didn’t really try. I’m lazy.

We just finished our lessons today. I posted it on my blog. Yes, its so hard to find age appropriate things. I just ended up having a discussion and having them narrate back to me.

What a great project, and I can’t wait to check these books out. Emily and I are going to the library tomorrow! Thank you for the recommendations and linking up to stART this week.
