What Makes a Rainbow? Ribbon Art Craft

A Story + Art = A Great stART!

What Makes a Rainbow? This week we read the book What Makes a Rainbow? by Betty Ann Schwartz and made this rainbow art for our stART project. We LOVE this book and I thought the ribbon rainbow craft was perfect for it! Each bright, vivid page highlights a different color of the rainbow. Our favorite part is that it is a “magic ribbon book.” As you turn each page another color of the ribbon rainbow magically appears until a complete ribbon rainbow appears. This book is so stinkin’ cute! Check out a few photos of the book below:

There is even a rainbow surprise at the end of the book. But, you’ll have to get your own copy to check it out! Winking smile

Ribbon Rainbow Instructions:

So, to make our rainbow (in honor of the cute ribbon rainbow in the book), we used ribbon. You can see our supplies below.

Rainbow Ribbon Craft

I tend to save all the ribbon that I ever get. If a gift or a card has ribbon on it, I save it. You never know when it will make the perfect accent on a scrapbook page! Anyhow, I raided my ribbon stash and cut lots of small pieces of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple ribbon (about 1 inch long). I drew six rainbow lines on the paper for the kids to use as a guide. Then, they got to work gluing the appropriate color ribbon onto the rainbow lines. Check out their final projects below.

I think they turned out great! In fact, I think I am going to frame them and display them in on the wall!!!

They turned out so good – I love the idea of this craft! I have a lot of ribbon too, but I’m not sure I have it in every color of the rainbow. :) We also have that book!

And here I thought it was tissue paper. Super cute.
My kids love that book, my Mother-in-Law has it, and we read it every time we go to their house.

I am seriously putting this idea away for when my daughter is older. I also save any and all ribbon for scrapbooking (my husband is starting to fear that I will turn into a hoarder). Now I can incorporate it into an art project with my little one. I really like the idea of using the ice tray to store the ribbons, that way the pieces don’t get thrown all over the floor!

I’ve never heard of this book before, but now I am putting it on my list. Those rainbows turned out so pretty – I doubt I would find so many colors though :)
