The Questions They Ask

KJ asked me a question as we were frantically trying to get our shoes on and get out the door. She asked, “Why do shoes have tongues?” I paused, trying to come up with an answer. Then she followed up, “Why aren’t they pink like my tongue?” So, not knowing what to tell her, I said, “That is a good question for the question book.” What is the question book you ask? Well, my kids often come up with questions that I just don’t know the answers to. So, we started the question book. I put all their questions in the book with the intentions of one day finding out the answers. Now, my ambition to find answers has not caught up with their curiousity. Sad to say, we have yet to find an answer a single question we have in the book thus far. Fortunately, for now they are just content knowing that I have recorded their questions in the infamous question book. Want to know some of the things we will hopefully discover…one day? Check out some of their questions:

  1. Do bees sting birds?
  2. How do popcorn seeds grow?
  3. How do slugs eat?
  4. Why do mushrooms grow in the yard?
  5. How is cheese made from milk?
  6. Are moths butterflies?
  7. Do whales have noses?

Got some answers to these question? Please save me some work and post your comments below!

I think I’d like to start a question book too. Now your kids have me wondering about some things…

So, I googled the whale question and came up with Blow holes.

Does it have gills or a nose?

Both fish and whales need oxygen. Fish use gills, open flaps along the sides of their bodies, to take oxygen from the water. A whale uses its nose and lungs, like you do. It’s hard to see a whale’s nose. It doesn’t stick out the way yours does because whales need streamlined bodies to help them swim fast. And they need a nose on the top of their head so they can breathe while the rest of their bodies are in the water.

So when you’re on a whale watch boat, look carefully. If you see something with gills, it’s a fish; If you see either one or two holes on the top of the head, it’s a whale and those are the “blowholes.”

Ahhh, thanks for looking into the nose question. I knew whales had blow holes, but I didn’t know it was the equivalent of our noses!!! Thanks!!!! Now I can actually give the kids an answer to one of their MANY questions!! :-)
